Forming Results of the Universal Top-Roll Plate Rolling Machine

In the processing industry for cylinder shells and curved components, workpiece forming quality directly determines the efficiency of subsequent welding and assembly. With its unique horizontal top-roll movement structure, the universal top-roll plate rolling machine (W11S) delivers excellent processing results in plate pre-bending, circular rolling, and cone forming, making it a mainstay machine for pressure vessels, environmental protection tanks, and steel structure manufacturing.

The most outstanding processing result of the universal top-roll plate rolling machine is pre-bending of the plate ends. After rolling with a conventional symmetrical three-roll plate rolling machine, long straight edges remain at both ends of the plate, requiring a separate press for plate-end pre-bending; this adds a processing step and increases material loss. The universal top-roll plate rolling machine, however, can horizontally offset the top roll and directly pre-bend both ends of the plate on the same machine. The remaining straight edge of the workpiece is short, the curvature at both ends of the shell section is continuous and smooth, and the weld joint fit-up gap is uniform. This effectively reduces pre-weld grinding and cutting allowance, saves raw materials, eliminates secondary lifting and transfer of the workpiece, and significantly shortens the production cycle.

Cylindrical rolling delivers stable forming results. The work rolls are made of 42CrMo alloy steel and undergo quenching and tempering plus high-frequency surface hardening, providing sufficient roll body rigidity. During rolling, the plate is subjected to uniform force; the finished cylinder has straight generatrix lines, small roundness error, and no obvious bulging or sagging, meeting the tolerance requirements for workpieces such as storage tanks and boiler shell sections. With chrome-plated roll surfaces, surface marks are reduced when processing easily scratched plates such as stainless steel and aluminum, ensuring workpiece appearance quality. CNC models feature built-in deflection compensation, further improving overall cylinder forming consistency when processing long and thick plates, making them suitable for batch production.

Cone shell (reducer) forming is a major highlight of the universal top-roll plate rolling machine. When processing conical shells, a guide plate is used to control the plate feed angle, and the horizontal displacement of the top roll can be adjusted to complete the roll bending of variable-diameter shells. The formed cone has a natural curvature transition, regular arcs at both the large and small ends, and uniform taper, effectively meeting the processing needs of special-shaped workpieces such as variable-diameter tanks and pipe reducers. In addition to cylinders and cones, the machine can also roll curved plates with different curvatures in sections, for processing components such as curved steel structures and head petals.

Of course, the universal top-roll plate rolling machine also has objective limitations. As a three-roll machine, it cannot achieve a theoretically zero straight edge; when processing high-strength steel plates and high-springback stainless steel plates, the springback amount must be calculated in advance, and some workpieces need to be re-mounted on the machine for roundness correction after welding. When processing long and thick plate cylinder shells, external support rollers are recommended to prevent the cylinder from sagging under its own weight and affecting finished roundness.

Overall, the universal top-roll plate rolling machine balances forming quality and production cost. Compared with four-roll plate rolling machines, its equipment purchase cost is lower; compared with conventional three-roll plate rolling machines, it eliminates the need for separate pre-bending equipment, requires fewer process steps, and achieves higher material utilization. One machine can process cylinders, curved plates, cones, and other workpieces, providing multiple functions in one machine. It is suitable for most cylinder forming scenarios in sheet metal processing plants, pressure vessel plants, environmental protection equipment plants, and is a highly cost-effective choice for medium and thick plate rolling.
